If you haven’t already made arrangements to join more than 5,000 of your critical care colleagues in February at the 33rd Critical Care Congress, now is the time to do so. The Society of Critical Care Medicine’s Congress is the only international, multidisciplinary forum dedicated to advancing the practice of all professionals in the field of critical care.
Scheduled for February 20-25, 2004 at the Gaylord Palms Resort and Convention Center in Orlando, Florida, Congress educational sessions address issues beyond basic medical education and highlight the hottest, newest solutions available in critical care.
Educational sessions will focus on timely topics, such as “The Toronto SARS Experience,” West Nile Virus and the SAFE Study Trial Results. Other topics include situations critical care professionals encounter every day, such as the diagnosis and treatment of acute diseases, monitoring and supportive techniques, and evidence-based practice, along with original research, and more. Speakers will discuss advancements in the treatment of status epilepticus, renal failure, ARDS, sepsis, and trauma, as well as the improved approaches to airway management, hemodynamic monitoring, sedation, and glucose control. In addition, this international, interdisciplinary forum provides attendees with the opportunity to learn from experts in their individual field as well as experts in other areas of critical care.

New in 2004 and anticipated to be among the most popular courses, the Fundamentals of Disaster Management (FDM) Instructor course will teach critical care professionals how to conduct an FDM course, which provides the latest information on disaster response, hampered communications, and natural and man-made disasters. The FDM course expands upon the information provided in the Society’s new pocket guide, Fundamentals of Disaster Management, and is held in conjunction with the Fundamentals of Critical Care Support (FCCS) Instructor course.
Due to the success of the 2003 FCCS Instructor course, this session’s capacity has been increased to hold double the attendees in 2004. The one-day FCCS Instructor course provides the opportunity to learn from critical care experts who continue to be luminaries to the FCCS program. Lectures cover a broad range of themes within critical care, including hemodynamic monitoring, neurologic support and acute respiratory failure. Furthermore, participants will learn and share hands-on teaching techniques on topics such as ventilator management through interactive skill stations. Attendance at previous instructor courses has been robust, so sign up for both the FCCS and FDM instructor courses today.
Congress attendees will also hear from worldrenowned critical care experts in unopposed morning and afternoon plenary sessions. The session topics include: Interface Between Clinical Care, Industry, Reimbursement; Renal Failure; Sepsis: We Have Met the Enemy; End-of-Life Decision Making: Lessons from the Ethicus and Ethicatt Studies; Acute Lung Injury in the 21st Century: What We Know and What We Don’t; Genetics and Prototyping; and Surviving Intensive Care.
To maximize attendees’ Congress experience, the Society added a new Exhibit Hall Theater (continuing education credit not available) that will rebroadcast the most popular sessions each day. Product Theater Workshops are also planned so that attendees can learn about the newest critical care products and services available in an interactive forum. While at Congress, attendees can stay connected through high-speed Internet available at both the Internet Pavilion and Laptop Stations.
In addition to the educational events, attendees will enjoy the benefits of a world-class destination. The Gaylord Palms Resort and Convention Center, host to the 33rd Critical Care Congress, is a full amenity resort conveniently located near Orlando-area theme parks, museums, theaters, golf courses, and other recreational and cultural activities. Advance discounted tickets to Walt Disney World are also available.
